  • IGMP snooping is a technology that Layer 2 switches can use to constrain the flooding of multicast traffic by dynamically configuring Layer 2 interfaces so that multicast traffic is forwarded to only those interfaces associated with IP multicast group members. IGMP snooping requires the switch to examine, or “snoop,” some Layer 3 information in the IGMP packets sent between the hosts and the router.
